The Birdhouses - Artists Residency
Location: Washington State, USA
Renderings: Studio Ekipa
Nestled on the slope of a lush forest near Seattle, USA, an enclave of microhomes offers an intimate sanctuary for its residents. Elevated above the forest floor, these homes provide privacy and a unique connection to nature, perfectly balancing seclusion and immersion. Each microhome, spanning a compact 25 square meters, is designed to accommodate a couple, featuring distinct areas for cooking, dining, working, relaxing, and sleeping.
Integrated floor storage conceals the bed when not in use, while folding and moveable furniture allows the space to transform seamlessly throughout the day.
Despite the minimal footprint, the double-height volumes and expansive windows dissolve the boundaries between inside and outside, creating an illusion of continuous, expansive space.
Architecturally, the microhomes are composed of two interlocking volumes. The smaller volume contains the bathroom and staircase, while the larger volume houses the main living area. Constructed from locally sourced wood, these structures are prefabricated and assembled on-site, emphasizing sustainability and efficiency. The wood facades are treated with the traditional Shou Sugi Ban method, charring the surface to protect against insects, fungi, and weathering.
The sloped roof, clad in insulated metal panels, support four solar panels, contributing to the homes’ energy needs. Additionally, rainwater is harvested, filtered and reused and a wood-burning stove provides essential heating.
Collectively known as the Birdhouses, these microhomes form a retreat that welcomes artists, authors, and researchers from various disciplines. Throughout the year, residents engage in creative projects, research, and experimentation, with stays limited to four months. This residency fosters a spirit of interdisciplinary dialogue, encouraging residents to draw inspiration from both nature and each other.
At the conclusion of their residency, artists are invited to leave behind a memento of their experience. This could be a book, a found object from the forest, or a creation made during their stay. These keepsakes are displayed on shelves lining the walls of the homes, serving as a source of inspiration for future residents and creating a tangible history of creativity and reflection.
The Birdhouses exemplify a harmonious blend of innovative design, sustainable living, and artistic collaboration, offering a unique retreat that celebrates the intersection of architecture and nature.
